Stranding

Have you seen NZ on the news over the weekend?  Sadly over 500 pilot whales had stranded themselves at an area at the top of the South Island called Farewell Spit.   It is a shallow Bay, and once up on the sand they have to wait until high tide to try and re float them.  Hundreds died this weekend and the saddest part was that many of them had to be humanely euthanized, as the calls if the dying whales was drawing more of them to the beach, where they would be also stranded.  Heart breaking stuff.

No one knows why this happens and why so many have done this.

  2. I did see on the early news this morning,
that 100 whales have re~floated! Even so,
it's a terrible thing to happen. It seems
that when they get into shallow waters,
they loose their directions, but, there
still not sure! Strange, because the whale
    is a very intelligent animal!

  3. We had not heard this sad news. We keep hoping the scientist can figure why this happens.

  7. Yeah, me and mum saw this on the news. How sad that they swim where they can't get back to the sea. Do you think the whales are overpopulated and outstripping their foods? So then they beach themselves to reduce the population?
