Learning

Mum is learning about her new camera, but she liked this candid shot of me.

We have a little point and shoot Olympus, which was often slow, zoomed in shots were blurry, the image stabilization shots were a bit rubbish, and overall it was not a high quality camera.

Mum looked at getting a fancy pants DSL camera, but in reality mum knew that she would never carry around such a large beast, and all the lenses and flashes and stuff are really expensive here.

So she is so far quite pleased with our new camera. It is light weight, has a built in flash, takes movies which you can zoom in and out of, the zoom is fabulous and it takes fast photos. The macro is good too, and you can set it on auto or use lots of the manual settings. The 12mp pictures take a bit longer to load onto blogger, and mum may have to change some settings to speed that up (we have slow slow broadband here). Mum has a lot of work to do to learn about all the camera settings (and photoshop), and we will let you know more as we go along.

This camera has good write ups and is on sale on Amazon at the moment, so if you are looking for a change, now could be a good time!!

By the way, have you looked at Pioneer Woman lately? She is having a cat photo competition and some of the pictures are fantastic. You can find them here: http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/

  5. That is a lovely picture of you Poppy. We have slow broadband here too so mum uses a max of 3mp. for blogger, sometimes less as photos take forever to load.

  6. Lovely shot and so interesting to hear about the camera.

Regarding the 12 mp pictures and blogger, Mom thinks it was Daisy's Mom who told her to save her pcitures for the blog at not bigger than 800 pixels (using iPhoto, export, then choose the size - 800 across x whatever comes up for height). That works well for us and the pictures look just fine on the blog.

  10. Great candid photo!

I'm glad you're mum is enjoying her new camera, I'm sure she'll get a lot of use out of it. I debated over a DSLR too, but because I don't have a car and carry everything in my knapsack back and forth to work (and on weekends) I didn't want the hassle of additional lenses (bulk and weight). Plus, for me, I need to be able to go quickly from super-macro mode for floral closeups to full telephoto for critters, depending on what I spy. I'd lose a lot of snapshots if I had to stop and change lenses. So I think your mum made a great choice! Have fun!

  11. Cute pic Poppy!

When the PM got her new camera and had trouble with them being too big, Jackie Morris, of the Ginger Cats, suggested changing them to a smaller format and then uploading those versions as she is on dial up too. How we do it is we get the pics ready for email purposes, change them to the smallest file and then instead of using them for email, we move them to a file that we use for our blog pics. Much, much faster!!!

  12. Good luck with your cool new camera! Don't forget that the higher mega pixels take up more storage space on your hard drive. That was a lesson I had to learn the hard way!
