Another Week

Another week has started.   Mum got herself up and she did go for a walk.  She went to a seaside cafe and had her lunch by herself.  She always feels brave eating out by herself, and even though she had her Kindle to keep her company it was nice to savour a tasty lunch with a wonderful view.  She window shopped but in reality there was nothing that grabbed her.  She is trying to be on a tight budget, and there is no harm in looking.  Of course the one thing we needed, she forgot about.  Oh well.

Groceries of course have to be bought every week, so mum got a pile of those.  Some fancy feasts for me and salad and meats for her.  Things sure are expensive at the supermarkets, and mum often wonders how people afford to feed a family on one income.  She finds it difficult feeding just her and me without spending loads.  From what we read on other blogs, groceries are pretty pricey here.  Steak and lamb are about $27 NZ a kilo (thats about 14 pounds or $22 US), Chicken breast is about $18 NZ/kg (9 pounds or $ 14 US).  Still mum knows that she is lucky to have a job and to be able to put food on the table.

Speaking of which she had a piece of pork with a warm potato salad and broccoli for her dinner.  A peach for her dessert is waiting for her - she is trying to eat her 5+ fruit and veg servings a day to keep healthy.

Hope you all have something tasty for your tea too.

  1. Goodness Poppy!x That food is expensive....! They say food is expensive over here to!
But, not if you shop around, even when it was just me and my daughter for 14yrs, l always consider myself a professional shopper...So! Food does'nt cost me a lot. And, l eat a lot of game to..Most of that is given to me to!
So, it's always best to shop around, a lot of supermarkets just rip people off..Or try....!

    Anyway...You look lovely to~day...x

  2. Food is expensive... as if most everything else. Hooray for trying to keep 5+ fruits and veggies in your daily lot! But even produce is expensive! I don't eat much in the wway of meat other than chicken and fish. Rarely do I ever have beef, pork, etc.

And hooray and thank Heaven for us both to be fortunate enough to have income enough for essentials... and a few wants, here and there. :)

    Have a lovely day, ladies!

  3. My human figured it out recently, and she spends more money feeding us than she spends feeding herself!

  4. We seem to be spending more and more each week at the supermarket. The price of meat is absurd. Considering we are a country of beef and lamb it seems very unfair to pay so much. We try to buy farm meet through friends who have land. The price is better and so is the taste. I have chickens and would love other farm animals but we are townies so not possible.

  5. Even the prices here are high, though yours seem unduly so. But then, since our human so rarely cooks, she really doesn't know the cost of roasts, etc. (Way beyond her budget, though.) About the only thing she buys is chicken!

Have a good week, we hope things are calm at work for your mum.

  6. Things are so expensive everywhere and with me, who hasn't had a pay increase in three years and had to suffer furlough days a few years back, it gets harder and harder. Yet, I look at how much I spend to feed my backyard critters (squirrels and birds), I know I could cut back and will once the weather gets warmer.

It doesn't seem like you have a car? If so, that would make comparison shopping impossible. So glad you found a home where you can walk everywhere. Have a great evening!

  7. Wow, that food IS expensive. Mum does a lot of comparison shopping (she checks the main shops' sales on the internets before going to town) and if there isn't any meat on sale she doesn't buy any. She usually buys what is in season and the least expensive but she always buys MY foods first.

  8. Those are rather high prices, Poppy. I am careful about how much I spend. I haven't had a raise in four years and the cost of living has shot up recently. I still buy steak but it is the cheapest variety; I can usually find some for $11 or $11 a kilogram, sometimes as low as $8, but I have to shop around. It's not a big piece that I allot myself at each meal, either. Chicken drumsticks are the main poultry, as they are cheap.

It's difficult these days. I don't eat bacon, which is too expensive for too little return, and anything such as ice cream is an unaffordable luxury. I'm just getting by and I live alone - except for the cats.

Society talks about eating healthy yet the good foods are too expensive for most people. Thank goodness politicians can still afford to eat well; they need all their strength to lead us.

  11. Yes food is awfully expensive. Now that I will only eat one type of kitty food - only available at very pricey Wholefoods shop - mum says all her food money goes on my food and she misses the days I enjoyed the cheaper kitty foods. Oh well, an old girl deserves the best. Meow, Jessica

  13. Where we live, fresh produce is horribly expensive. And we can't grow a singe thing in our hot arid climate with it's sandy, salty soil. Does your mum have time for a small vegie garden next spring?
