Another NZ MIllion Dollar House - Crazy House Prices in NZ

Got a spare NZ Millon dollars?  You could have bought this lovely home on the city outskirts of our biggest city Auckland.
It comes with all the mod cons.  NO Running water, No electricity and a very very bad odour.
A lovely kitchen - mmmmm a girl could dream of the party you could hold there.

Crazy prices huh?!!!!!  House prices are getting out of control here.  It is almost impossible to get into buying a home as house rental prices  and cost of living are  so high, making it difficult to save.  I am sure you could all get a much nicer house in your suburbs for the price.

  1. It's getting terrible. I feel very sorry for the younger generation. Many will never know the joy of owning their own homes

  2. Who spends this type of money for a house like that? You could even find a nicer co-op (MUCH nicer co-op) in the ultra-cool Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY for less! My human knows, she's priced them. And you could live in a mini-mansion in our town for that money.

  3. It's much the same over here poppy!x
I live down south in the country, it's bad enough here!
But, up in London it's silly money, paying millions for a 8x12 room!
They do have running water.....Usually from the ceiling to the floor! :>).

  4. Poppy, dear, $1 million would purchase a Midwest McMansion with 3-4 BRs, 3 baths, 2 lounges, gourmet kitchen and attached 3 bay garage. BUT. Folks without a hefty pay packet have very few housing options at, say, $500-700/month. We have school buses picking up kids from McMansions, then from cheap motels where they live. Your mum is fortunate to have found housing within walking distance -- almost non-existant public transportation complicates our housing problems here.

  5. That's utterly horrible. Who is buying houses there? Someone must be, otherwise the sellers wouldn't ask for so much. Why aren't questions being asked in Parliament about this? Why are prices so high in New Zealand??

  6. That would be just over $888K in Canadian currency.

For $888K here you could buy a pretty darned nice mansion. Huge, 3 to 5 bedrooms, pool, gardens, landscaped, blah blah. Sure, a lot of properties are over $1M CDN, but a place like that would go for less than $200K here. Even my townhouse is in better shape!

  8. Holy smokes! That's absolutely insane, Poppy! The area in which we live is known for high housing prices, but for that kind of money, you could buy a pretty nice house here, with some land!

  10. OMG!!!! That's insane - so apparently whoever can afford property in NZ is by definition wealthy...at least they will be when they sell it.

That amount of money would purchase a huge house here in a walled in community (to keep us riff-raff out). We're hearing that our market is overvalued and there may a market correction.

  11. Oh yeah, our not so little house didn't cost mum that much.

  12. this place should be condemned. Not put up for sale! House prices are getting pretty bad in Toronto. A recent news story showed similar run down places going for a million. And people are competing against one another to buy these dumps! Meow from Jessica

  13. We have the same sort of thing. In our area it's called a tear down- a decrepit, unattractive or undesirable home that is located on a view lot, in a highly desirable neighborhood , has had a zoning change from residential to commercial, or has a large lot that can then be subdivided. It's all about the location.
